Franz Schall



Franz Schall nació el 1 de junio de 1918 en Graz en Steiermark, Austria. Fue artillero antiaéreo a principios de la guerra pero, el 1 de septiembre de 1941, comenzó a entrenar como piloto. Al finalizar su entrenamiento en febrero de 1943, Schall fue transferido al JG 52 en el Frente Oriental. Leutnant Schall fue asignado a 3./JG 52. Obtuvo su primera victoria el 6 de mayo de 1943, cuando derribó un caza ruso LaGG-5. El 1 de agosto de 1943, Schall registró su décima victoria cuando derribó un avión de ataque a tierra ruso Il-2 Sturmovik. Registró otros dos Il-2 derribados el 24 de octubre para elevar su total de victorias a 20. El total de victorias de Schall había llegado a 26 a fines de 1943. El 16 de enero de 1944, Schall derribó a tres cazas rusos por sus victorias 30 a 32. Reclamó su 40ª víctima, un caza ruso P-39, derribado el 19 de abril. Schall registró 11 victorias en mayo, incluidos tres P-39 derribados el 2 de mayo (45-47), su 50a victoria el 17 de mayo de 1944, otro Il-2 y tres aviones enemigos derribados el 30 de mayo (51-53) . Derribó un Il-2 y un P-39 el 4 de junio para aumentar su total de victorias a 60. En julio, Schall registró otras 10 victorias, incluidos tres aviones enemigos el 14 de julio (65-67) y cuatro el 16 de julio. (70-73). Schall fue nombrado Staffelkapitän de 3./JG 52 el 11 de agosto de 1944. Esto presagiaría su período más exitoso de la guerra. En agosto registró 38 victorias, incluidos tres aviones enemigos derribados el 12 de agosto (74-76), tres el 24 de agosto (79-81), 11, incluidos seis Il-2, el 26 de agosto (83-93), tres otros Il-2 el 28 de agosto (94-96) y 13, incluidos 11 Il-2, el 31 de agosto (97-109). Sin embargo, Schall fue derribado por fuego antiaéreo y tuvo que realizar aterrizajes forzosos en cuatro ocasiones, incluida una vez detrás de las líneas rusas desde donde logró negociar su camino de regreso a su unidad. El 25 de septiembre de 1944, el Oberleutnant Schall fue transferido al Eprobungskommando Nowotny, comandado por el mayor Walter Nowotny (258 victorias, RK-Br) operando el nuevo caza a reacción Me 262. Se le asignó el mando de 2. Staffel. En la mañana del 8 de noviembre de 1944, derribó tres cazas P-51 de la USAAF (120-122) que escoltaban un bombardero de la USAAF, pero luego sufrió apagones de ambos motores. Mientras intentaba deslizarse de regreso a su base en Hesepe, fue interceptado por un P-51, pilotado por el teniente James Kenney del 357 ° FG, que dañó gravemente el Me 262 A-1a de Schall (W.Nr. 110 404) “White 7 ”. Schall salió disparado solo para ver explotar su avión. Tras la muerte del Mayor Walter Nowotny el 8 de noviembre de 1944, los pilotos supervivientes y el personal de Eprobungskommando Nowotny se incorporaron al JG 7. Hauptmann Schall lideró el 10./JG 7, con base en Oranienburg, y continuó anotando con el Me 262, pero muchas de sus victorias fueron nunca confirmado por la desintegración de fuentes oficiales. El 4 de abril de 1945, Schall derribó un P-51 (131) pero luego fue derribado él mismo. Salió de allí sobreviviendo ileso. El 10 de abril de 1945, Schall derribó un P-51, para su 133ª y última victoria, pero luego intentó un aterrizaje de emergencia en Parchim. Su avión rodó hacia el cráter de una bomba y explotó, matándolo instantáneamente.



A Franz Schall se le atribuyeron 133 victorias en 530 misiones. Logró 116 victorias sobre el frente oriental, incluidos 61 Stormoviks. De sus 17 victorias registradas en el frente occidental, todas las obtuvo volando el caza a reacción Me 262 e incluyen seis bombarderos de cuatro motores y 10 cazas P-51.
